Complex Pain Diagnosis

The management of complex facial pain involves a comprehensive approach to diagnose and treat persistent or chronic pain affecting the face and surrounding areas. An Endodontist’s role is to assist in determining if the facial pain is arising from a tooth (endodontic-related problem) or if it is originating from another source.

Non-endodontic facial pain can arise from various sources, and it is essential to consider other potential causes when diagnosing and managing facial pain. These causes may include temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorders, such as jaw joint inflammation or dysfunction, which can result in localized or referred facial pain. Muscle-related conditions like myofascial pain syndrome or muscular tension can also contribute to facial pain. Sinus infections or sinusitis can cause pain in the cheeks, forehead, or around the eyes. Additionally, facial pain can stem from neuropathic conditions like trigeminal neuralgia, which involves irritation or damage to the trigeminal nerve.

Comprehensive evaluation and assessment are crucial to accurately diagnose the underlying cause and determine the most appropriate treatment approach for non-endodontic facial pain. If your pain is determined to be of non-endodontic origin, we will work collaboratively with other healthcare professionals, like Oral Medicine specialists, Maxillo-Facial Surgeons, Neurologists and Physiotherapists to make sure you receive the appropriate care you require.
